WHAT I DO.

I build brands. Not from a brief, from nothing. For twenty years I have conceived concepts and then owned them: the tequila, the bar, the restaurant, the studio. I wrote the positioning, art directed the packaging, designed the room, produced the activation, and then stood behind the register on a Tuesday to find out whether any of it worked. That is a different education than agency life gives you. When the money is yours, you stop making beautiful decisions and start making load bearing ones. You learn what a brand actually needs versus what looks good in a deck. You learn to be crafty, because the budget is finite and the answer usually is not more spend. You learn that a logo is not a brand, a launch party is not a strategy, and the thing that moves a case off a shelf in West Texas is not the thing that gets you press in New York. So when I creative direct, I direct toward outcomes. I can hold the vision and the P&L in the same hand.

01

Brand Creation

I start where most briefs end: with the question of why this thing should exist at all. That means finding the white space, then naming it, clearing the name, and building the position it will defend for the next decade. From there, the identity system, the packaging, the voice, and the references that tell everyone downstream what is on brand without having to ask. I have named and built spirits brands, restaurants, bars, and studios, including one tequila I took from a blank page to a national portfolio, and I have done the same work for legacy houses looking for their next label.

Scope includes

  • Positioning and competitive white space
  • Naming and trademark strategy
  • Identity systems and packaging design
  • Verbal identity, voice, and story
  • Brand books and guidelines that survive contact with a sales team
  • Launch strategy and the first year of the brand's life
02

Creative Direction

I set the vision and then I protect it. That means building the reference world, hiring the photographers, designers, and directors who can reach it, and giving them enough rope to surprise me while holding the line on what the brand is. I have art directed campaigns, shoots, packaging, film, and physical spaces, and I have run the work from the first mood board to the final file, usually with a team small enough that I am still in the edit. Twenty years in, my job is less about having the idea than about knowing which idea is worth the money and which one is just flattering us.

Scope includes

  • Campaign concept and creative platforms
  • Art direction across print, digital, packaging, and environment
  • Photography and film: casting, direction, production, edit
  • Building and leading creative teams and outside collaborators
  • Artist and brand collaborations
  • Guarding the brand across every touchpoint, including the ones nobody assigns
03

Brand Audit & Refresh

Most brands that come to me are not broken creatively. They are unclear. I go through the whole picture, the positioning, the packaging, the pricing, the shelf presence, the sales story, the way the brand actually behaves in a market, and separate the problems that design can solve from the ones it cannot. Then I rebuild what is failing and defend what is working, because the fastest way to kill a brand is to refresh the one asset its customers still recognize. I have taken brands through full repositioning and relaunch, including my own, which is a useful thing to have done, since it means I have sat on both sides of the conversation where someone says the label is fine and the problem is distribution.

Scope includes

  • Competitive and category audit
  • Positioning diagnostic: what the brand says versus what the market hears
  • Packaging and identity assessment, shelf and digital
  • Sales story and trade material review
  • Repositioning strategy and relaunch roadmap
  • Guidelines and rollout across every touchpoint

How it works

THE PROCESS.

01

Discover

I ask the questions a consultant will not, because I have had to answer them myself. What is really selling. What is not, and why. Who you are actually competing with, not who you wish you were. Where the brand is losing people between the shelf and the register. Everything I make comes out of those answers.

02

Define

Everything from discovery gets narrowed to a single page. What you stand for, who you are for, what you refuse to be, and the one thing you can say that no competitor can say back. If it takes a paragraph to explain your brand, we are not done.

03

Design

The visual and verbal system, built with intention. Every element earns its place. Trends are borrowed equity and they expire, so I design toward what will still feel right in ten years rather than what is winning on a mood board today. The details matter here. The weight of a bottle, the break in a sentence, the two millimeters of a label.

04

Deploy

Handoff is the moment most agencies leave. It is the moment I have had to live in. Deploy means guidelines, templates, and asset systems, plus the unglamorous half: how it looks on a shelf, how a distributor sells it, how a team stays consistent when the budget is gone and I am not around. Building the brand is the easy part. Keeping it alive is the job.

LET'S TALK SCOPE.
